Rindge, N.H. (April 25) -- On Saturday evening, the Assumption College baseball team dropped a Northeast-10 divisional doubleheader at top-ranked Franklin Pierce University. The Hounds dropped game one by a 9-4 final, followed by an 11-2 setback in the nightcap.

Game One - Franklin Pierce 9, Assumption 4
In game one, the Ravens took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first as a pair of RBI hits and a steal of home put the hosts ahead. Assumption answered in the top of the fifth as junior Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc) doubled to center and came home on a Ravens throwing error for the 3-1 margin. A solo home run to right center by sophomore Ben O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) in the top of the sixth cut the advantage down to just 3-2 before the Ravens surged ahead with a five-run bottom of the seventh. Matt Walsh led the rally with a two-RBI hit as Franklin Pierce posted five hits overall in the inning. Jay Jabs added an RBI single to right in the eighth, followed by a two-RBI double down the right field line by sophomore Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) in the ninth to account for the 9-4 final.

Junior Anthony Perry (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) went six innings and took the loss to fall to 1-6 overall, while Brendan O'Rourke picked up the win as he threw 5.2 innings and struck out nine to improve to 9-0 on the season. Paul Fahey pitched the final 3.1 innings, earning his second save of the season.

Paine led the offense in game one with two hits and two runs scored, while Coggeshall was 1-for-4 with two runs batted in.

Game Two - Franklin Pierce 11, Assumption 2
In the second game, an eight-run third inning was the difference as the Ravens came away with the 11-2 victory. Assumption added runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings, starting with an RBI double down the left field line by senior Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass./Holy Name) in the fifth that scored freshman Jordan Roper (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield). In the sixth, senior Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) reached on a one-out double up the middle and eventually scored on a wild pitch for the second run.

Freshman Kyle Chudoba (Oxford, Conn./Oxford) went 2.1 innings in the loss, falling to 1-5 overall. Freshman Nick Massarelli (Southwick, Mass./Southwick) threw 5.2 innings of relief, scattering eight hits and allowing three runs. Paul Covelle went the distance for the Ravens, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out seven.

The Hounds drop to 8-26 overall and 4-14 in divisional play, while the Ravens are now 37-2 overall and 19-1 in the league.

Assumption is back in action on Sunday afternoon as the Hounds and Ravens close the three-game series with a 1 p.m. start in Rindge.
