Worcester, Mass. (May 3) -- In the 2015 season finale on Sunday afternoon, the Assumption College baseball team dropped a 9-3 final to Bentley University in divisional play at Rocheleau Field.
Assumption finishes the season 9-30 overall and 5-18 in league play, while Bentley ends at 10-23 overall and 8-13 in the league.
Bentley got on the board with two outs in the top of the first as Nick Neshe scored on a passed ball for the early 1-0 lead. The Falcons added to that lead with a three-run fourth behind three hits that included a two-out double by Justin Ashworth for a 4-0 advantage. Assumption got on the board in the bottom of the frame with a pair as sophomore Ben O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) got things started with a bases-loaded walk for the first run. Junior Michael Panza (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) was hit by a pitch to get on base and eventually came home on a bloop hit to right by sophomore Matt Murphy (Wakefield, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) to cut the lead to 4-2.
The Falcons plated two in the top of the fifth on a two-out triple to left by Bryan Rocha, followed by a two-run eighth and a single run in the ninth. Assumption scored its third run of the game in the bottom of the seventh as freshman Bryan Guerrero (Boston, Mass./Catholic Memorial) came home on a Bentley throwing error as the Hounds dropped the eventual 9-3 final.
Junior Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc) and Murphy led the Hounds with two hits each, while four Bentley players had multiple hits.
Freshman Kyle Chudoba (Oxford, Conn./Oxford) went 5.1 innings and took the loss to drop to 1-6, scattering eight hits with five strikeouts and five walks. Starting pitcher Evan Walsh picked up the win to improve to 4-3 as he went six innings, giving up six hits with five strikeouts.
