- The Lead: The Assumption College volleyball team fell in straight set to Bentley University tonight in Northeast-10 play. Junior Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H. / Saint Thomas Aquinas) recorded her 1,000 dig of her career in the second set and led the Hounds with 18 on the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In set one, Bentley got out to a 6-2 lead and then built it up to 16-8. Three kills by junior Julia Goyette (Randolph, Mass. / Ursuline Academy) and a kill by classmate Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H. / Salem) highlighted the Hounds run that brought them to within four (19-15). The Falcons scored the next six out of seven points to win set one 25-16.
- Bentley came out fast again in set two, leading the Hounds 11-4. After Bentley stretched its lead out to 20-11, a kill by Goyette, a service ace by sophomore Kellie Smith (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) and two errors on the Falcons brought the score to 20-15. Bentley rattled off the next three points to take a commanding 23-15 leads, before eventually winning the set 25-18.
- Set three was tightly contested as Assumption tried to force a fourth set. The scored bounced back and forth as the two teams exchanged blows. The Hounds took their first lead at 11-10 as they used an attack error on the Falcons to break the tie. Kills by Smith, freshman Tess Haller (Cape Elizabeth, Maine / Cape Elizabeth) and Goyette kept Assumption in front 14-12, but Bentley took advantage of three straight errors on Assumption to tie the score at 15 all. After the Falcons took a 17-15 lead, the Hounds scored four straight points, highlighted by a kill and service ace by freshman Zara Velez (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush). Bentley used a timeout to get their offensive sets back in order and tallied eight straight points to win the set 25-19.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Goyette once again led Assumption on offense, tallying 10 kills, while Burke and Smith recorded eight and six respectively.
- Junior Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake) registered 26 assists to pace the Hounds, as Chrisom and Velez chipped in with three and two assists.
- On the defensive side, Chrisom led the way with 18 digs, including her 1,000 career dig. Velez helped the cause with 11, while Romanik and Smith chipped in with seven apiece.
- Bentley was led by Shannon Kelly and Lauren Van Buren who each tallied ten kills. Krista Campbell led all players with 33 assists and Celia Cristofoli led the Falcons with 18 digs.
