THE BASICS:

- Location: Worcester, Mass. (Rocheleau Field)
- The Lead: On Sunday afternoon at Rocheleau Field, the Assumption College baseball team ran its winning streak to three straight with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Southern Connecticut State University. The Hounds took game one by a convincing 15-8 final before pulling out an 8-7 victory in game two.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE
- Assumption jumped on top of the Owls in the top of the first inning with a six-run frame as the Hounds pounded out six hits. Junior Jake Byrne (Grafton, Mass./Saint John's) got things started with an RBI single through the left side to score senior Michael Panza (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame). Freshman Hunter Tralli (Berlin, Conn./Northwest Catholic) roped a two-RBI single to center, followed by a two-RBI triple down the right field line from senior Colin Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) to stretch the lead to 5-0. Clancy eventually scored the final run of the first inning on a groundout to close the six-run inning.
- The Hounds chased Owls starter Cole Bryant in the top of the second after a leadoff double to left center from junior Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury). After advancing to third on a wild pitch, he came home on a sacrifice fly from Byrne for the 7-0 lead.
- The Owls got on the board in the fourth as Kyle Hart reached on a leadoff single and came home on a single through the right side from Jake Paul. Alex Wichman added two more on a deep double to left center before being thrown out in a rundown attempting to stretch it into a triple.
- Assumption added a run in the fourth as Tralli came home on an RBI single from freshman Trevor McQuade (Westwood, Mass./Xaverian) that chased Owls reliever Jordan Picini from the game with one out. The Hounds loaded the bases with two outs in the inning after Panza was hit by a pitch, setting the stage for senior Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc Regional). Paine reached on a fielding error from the Owls to score Clancy, followed by a bases loaded walk by Coggeshall to make it 10-3.
- Southern Connecticut picked up a single run in the sixth to cut the lead to 10-4 as Tyler Criscuolo came home on a bases loaded fielder's choice. The Hounds added two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh, while the Owls plated four in the ninth to account for the 15-8 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Tralli was a game-high 4-for-6 for the game, while Coggeshall was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. In addition, four other Hounds had two hits each as Assumption pounded out 19 hits for the game.
- For the Owls, Jake Paul led the offense with a 3-for-4 outing, while Kyle Hart and Greg Zullo each had a pair of hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME TWO
- In game one, the Hounds struck for two runs as Coggeshall doubled to the right field corner and sophomore Andrew Jaehnig (Quincy, Mass./Boston College) followed with a double to left center to drive in the second run. The game remained that way until the bottom of the third when Byrne singled through the left side to drive in Paine for a two-out run and the 3-0 advantage.
- Byrne added another RBI with two outs in the bottom of the fifth as he singled to right to bring home Paine for the 4-0 advantage. Tralli followed up with two-RBI double to left center to score Jaehnig and Byrne for the six-run lead through six innings.
- The Owls put together a seven-run rally in the top of the seventh though as they had four hits and took advantage of two Assumption errors to take their first lead of the day at 7-6 heading to the bottom of the frame.
- In the seventh, Jaehnig singled up the middle to score Paine after the senior catcher had reached on a walk to lead off the inning. The momentum continued into the bottom of the eighth as McQuade reached on a leadoff single and advanced around the bases on three straight passed balls to score the eventual game-winning run.
- Freshman pitcher Colton King (Westerly, R.I./Moses Brown Prep) threw the last 2.2 innings in relief for the Hounds as he picked up the victory to improve to 1-0. Jake Santamaria fell to 0-2 for the Owls in the loss.
- For the game, Jaehnig and Byrne each went 3-for-4 at the plate, while McQuade and Paine had two hits each. Paine also scored a career-high four runs in game two while also reaching base on a walk.
