THE BASICS:

- The Lead: Powered by walkoff double by senior Colin Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) in the ninth inning of game two, the Assumption College baseball team picked up a doubleheader split with the University of New Haven on Saturday afternoon. The Hounds dropped game one by a 7-2 final before taking the nightcap by a 5-4 margin.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE
- The Chargers picked up single runs in the first, third and fifth to stake to a 3-0 advantage heading into the sixth inning. After New Haven pushed the lead to 5-0 in the top of the sixth, Assumption climbed back in to the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning as senior Michael Panza (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) led off the inning with a walk. Panza, along with junior Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury), eventually came home on an RBI double from junior Jake Byrne (Grafton, Mass./Saint John's) to cut the margin to 5-2.
- New Haven answered with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to account for the 7-2 final as the Chargers outhit the Hounds by a 13-5 margin in the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Coggeshall posted two hits in the loss, while Byrne led the team with two RBI. Nick Perrelli was 4-for-5 with two RBI for the Chargers, while Nick Russo, Robert Petrillo and Andrew Garcia each had a pair of hits.
- David Palmer improved to 1-1 overall with the win as he went seven innings for New Haven as he scattered just three hits with seven strikeouts. Sophomore Kyle Chudoba (Oxford, Conn./Oxford) took the loss for the Hounds as he fell to 1-5 after going 5.2 innings with nine hits, five runs allowed and one strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME TWO
- Assumption seized a 1-0 edge in the first as senior Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) scored after reaching earlier in the inning on a one-out walk. The Hounds stretched the lead to 3-0 in the third behind an RBI hit from Panza and an RBI groundout from Byrne as Assumption had three hits in the frame.
- The score remaining 3-0 until the seventh when both teams added single runs, sending the game into the final two frames at 4-1 in favor of the hosts.
- Heading to the ninth, New Haven tied the score with a three-run inning as the Chargers took advantage of two Hound errors in the frame. Petrillo scored the first run for New Haven, followed by a two-RBI single to center by Joe Caico later in the inning to tie the game at 4-4 with two outs.
- In the bottom of the ninth, Byrne singled to right center to give the Hounds runners on first and second with no outs. Sophomore Nick Massarelli (Southwick, Mass./Southwick) pinch ran for Byrne, as he advanced to second on a single from freshman Hunter Tralli (Berlin, Conn./Northwest Catholic). Massarelli scored the eventual game winner as Panza's hit to right picked up the doubleheader split for the Hounds.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption outhit the Chargers 13-6 in the game as freshman Alex Richardson (Rehoboth, Mass./Bishop Feehan) led the offense with a 3-for-4 effort that included a run scored. Panza again picked up two hits and Clancy had two hits and two runs batted in.
- Senior Anthony Perry (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) went seven innings in the start as he gave up just four hits with one run and two strikeouts in the no-decision. Senior Kevin O'Connor (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) eventually got the win for the Hounds after the ninth-inning rally as he now sits at 1-0 overall.
- Brian Caselli took the loss for the Chargers, while Russo had a pair of hits as the New Haven leadoff batter.

- Assumption is back in action on Sunday, April 10th as the Hounds host Southern Connecticut for a Northeast-10 doubleheader beginning at Noon at Rocheleau Field.
