- The Lead: In the first round of the 2016 Northeast-10 Conference Tournament, the fourth-seeded Assumption College baseball team dropped a 6-0 final to top-seeded Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday night at Pappas Field. The playoff appearance was the first the Hounds since 2009.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Ravens got on the board in the bottom of the first as Justin Brock reached on a four-pitch walk and later came home on an RBI two-out single up the middle by Chris LaVorgna for the early 1-0 edge.
- Franklin Pierce added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Jay Jabs launched a solo home run to right field for the 2-0 advantage.
- The Hounds threatened in the top of the sixth as senior Michael Panza (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) doubled to center with one out, but was stranded as the visitors continued to trail 2-0. In the bottom of the frame, the Ravens loaded the bases with no outs as Max DiTondo bunted down the third base line to reach first. After a fly out to first for one out, Kurtis White made the next at-bat count as he hit a grand slam to right field for the 6-0 advantage.
- The White grand slam chased Assumption starter Mike Curtis (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) after 5.1 innings as senior Steve Flynn (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter-Marian) came on for the Hounds.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Curtis allowed six runs on six hits with four walks and one strikeout as he took the loss to finish the season at 4-4 overall. Flynn went the final 2.2 innings for the Hounds allowing just one hit with a pair of strikeouts. Paul Covelle earned the victory for the Ravens and is now 9-1 overall after going the distance with four hits allowed and nine strikeouts for the Ravens.
