- The Lead: On Friday afternoon, the Assumption College baseball team completed a split with Bentley University in the team's final games of the regular season. Game one was completed after being suspended due to rain on Thursday as the Hounds took a 4-2 win, followed by a 7-2 Bentley victory in the second game.
With the split, the Hounds clinched the program's first postseason berth since 2009 as the Hounds picked up the No. 4 seed in the Northeast Division in the upcoming Northeast-10 Tournament.
Game One
HOW IT HAPPENED:f
- The game was suspended on Thursday after five innings due to weather and resumed on Friday afternoon. The Hounds took a 2-0 lead in the third as senior Colin Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) singled up the middle to score junior Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and sophomore Andrew Jaehnig (Quincy, Mass./Boston College).
- After the Falcons answered with two runs in the fourth, the game was suspended after five as the area was impacted with rain. The Hounds came out strong as the game was resumed, pushing across single runs in the seventh and ninth for the 4-2 win. In the seventh, senior Michael Panza (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) reached on a leadoff single to left and later came home on a two-out RBI single to left from Jaehnig. Coggeshall added a run in the ninth as he reached on a one-out single to right and scored on an RBI single through the left side by senior Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) for the 4-2 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Jaehnig finished the game a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with one run scored and one RBI, while Coggeshall added two runs and was 2-for-5 at the plate. Paine was 2-for-4, while Clancy had two RBI. Overall, Assumption outhit the Falcons by a 14-5 margin.
- Senior Steve Flynn (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter-Marian) got the start and went the first five innings on Thursday, while sophomore Kyle Chudoba (Oxford, Conn./Oxford) threw four perfect innings with one strikeout as he improved to 3-7 with the win.
- Bill Sullivan was on the mound on Friday for the Falcons, going four innings while scattering seven hits and allowing two runs to drop to 4-5 in the loss.
Game Two
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption took a 1-0 lead in the third as freshman Trevor McQuade (Westwood, Mass./Xaverian) reached on a one-out double down the right field line and scored on a Panza double to right. The Falcons answered with a four-run fourth, led by a two-RBI single up the middle by Mike Samko as Bentley went ahead 4-1. Clancy scored Coggeshall in the seventh on an RBI groundout, while Bentley added three runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning for the 7-2 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Chudoba took the loss to fall to 3-8 as he went the first 3.1 innings with six hits and three runs. Paul Frisoli went eight strong for the Falcons, scattering four hits with two runs allowed and six strikeouts.
UP NEXT:
- The Hounds are back in action on Tuesday, May 10th in the first round of the Northeast-10 Tournament as the team travels to top-seeded Franklin Pierce University for a 6 p.m. start in Rindge, N.H.
