Basball Drops a Pair to Southern New Hampshire

THE BASICS:

- Score: Southern N.H. 12, Assumption 6 (Game One); Southern N.H. 5, Assumption 4 (Game Two)

- Records: Assumption (15-23, 8-15 NE10); Southern N.H. (33-7, 19-2 NE10)

- Location: Worcester, Mass. (Rocheleau Field)

- The Lead: Southern New Hampshire swept a pair of games today at Rocheleau field, defeating Assumption 12-6 in the first game, before pulling out a 5-4 win in game two where freshman Ben Curry (Derry, N.H. / Pinkerton Academy) was thrown out at the plate trying to score the game tying run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME ONE

- Assumption got on the board in the bottom of the first when sophomore Hunter Tralli (Berlin, Conn. / Northwest Catholic) connected on a one-out single to leftfield. Junior Andrew Jaehnig (Quincy, Mass. / Boston College) then singled through the right side of the infield, advancing Tralli to third, before senior Jake Byrne (Grafton, Mass. / Saint John's) recorded an RBI single up the middle.

- Southern New Hampshire took the lead in the second, as the Penmen put two runs on the board, collecting three singles and two stolen bases to do their damage.

- The Hounds tied the score at two runs in the third, before taking the lead in the fourth. Sophomore Trevor McQuade (Westwood, Mass. / Xaverian) doubled home Jaehnig to tie the game and freshman Jared Brescia (Brentwood, N.H. / Exeter) tallied his 17th RBI of the year when he drove in sophomore Mike Schmidt (Jackson, N.J. / Jackson Memorial) to take a 3-2 lead.

- The teams traded a pair of runs in the fifth, as the Penmen took a 4-3 lead in the top half of the inning, before the Hounds once again regained the lead, 5-4. Jaehnig walked to lead off the inning, before Byrne launched his fourth homerun of the season to make the score 5-4.

- Southern New Hampshire unloaded in the seventh, scoring eight runs to blow open the game, 12-5. The Penmen registered eight hits, including three triples and a double to go with two walks to do all of their damage in the inning.

- Jaehnig and Byrne hit consecutive singles in the bottom of the ninth, before McQuade singled through the right side of the infield to score Jaehnig and finish the scoring at 12-6.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Byrne finished 3-for-5 at the plate with a homerun, three RBI and a run scored to lead the Hounds.

- Jaehnig went 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored to push his average over .400 for the season, while McQuade and sophomore Kevin Quinlivan (Shrewsbury, Mass. / St. John's) each registered two hits.



HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME TWO

- Junior Mike Curtis (Wilmington, Mass. / Wilmington) started game two and pitched a complete game, allowing five runs to go with three strikeouts and zero walks.

- Assumption once again took an early lead, scoring a run in the first inning when Tralli drew a one-out walk, Byrne then singled to centerfield sending Tralli to third before McQuade connected on a two-out single to leftfield to give the Hounds a 1-0 lead.

- The Hounds kept the lead until the fifth when Joshua Zbierski sent a moon shot over the center field wall to tie the game at one run. Later in the inning, Derek Bauer doubled to right center scoring two more runs to give the Penmen a 3-1 lead.

- After the visitors scored twice more in the seventh to up their lead to 5-1, Brescia drove in Schmidt to pull Assumption within three runs.

- In the bottom of the ninth, Quinlivan led off with a double off the centerfield fence and Tralli reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing Quinlivan to score. Byrne then stepped up to the plate as the game tying run and roped a double off of the leftfield fence to score Tralli and make it a one run game at 5-4. Curry came on to pinch run for Byrne at second base when freshman Derek Adamson (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford) hit a single to leftfield where the outfielder threw an absolute strike to catch Curry at home to end the game at 5-4.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Schmidt finished 3-for-4 in game two to pace the Hounds, while Byrne went 2-for-5 with an RBI.

- Tralli scored twice, drew two walks and knocked in a run, while Adamson finished 2-for-5.

 

 UP NEXT:

- The Hounds return to action tomorrow as they close out the weekend series with Southern New Hampshire at 12:00 p.m.
