WORCESTER, Mass. - The Assumption softball team is seeded third in the NE10 Tournament and will host fourth seeded Southern New Hampshire for the first round of the NE10 Tournament today at Marois Field in Worcester at 3:00 p.m.
This is the third straight season that the Hounds will be in the NE10 Tournament. They enter the Tournament at 19-17 overall and 15-9 in conference play. This past week Assumption went 3-4 picking up wins against Franklin Pierce, Southern New Hampshire and Saint Anselm. Sophomore outfielder Caitlin Mirabell (Shoreham, N.Y./ Shoreham-Wading River) tallied three RBI agianst SNHU while junior Stephanie Menard (Cranston, R.I./ Cranston HS West) hit a three-run home run to defeat Saint Anselm 7-4.
The Assumption offense is led by senior outfielder Ashley Clark (Pawtucket, R.I./William E. Tolman) who has a .344 batting average and 15 RBI, while senior shortstop Ashley Abad (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) has also registered 15 RBI and a .319 batting average. Menard leads the team in RBI with 18, and in home runs with four. Junior Kendal Roy (Grafton, Mass./Grafton) has pitched 145 innings for the Hounds recording 91 strikeouts and a 2.66 ERA.
The Penmen enter today's contest at 25-19 overall and 11-13 in conference play. As a team they have registered a .267 batting average and a 2.66 ERA. Sophomore Erin Garczynski leads the team with a .427 batting average hitting six doubles, one triple, six home runs and driving in 42 RBI. Junior Katie Horiuchi has added 21 RBI while freshman Erin Tyrell has 19. Senior pitcher Nicole Gubellini leads the team with 81 strikeouts and a 1.67 ERA to earn an 8-3 record.
The Hounds and Penmen played a three game series earlier this season, with the Penmen taking the series 2-1. Assumption dropped the first two games 4-0 and 15-0, but fought back to win the third game 9-8. Mirabell led the Hounds offense with three RBI and a double.
