-The Lead: The Assumption College baseball team defeated the Knights of Bridgeport University in their final game in Florida on Thursday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-After three scoreless innings, Assumption got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a double to center field by Matt Schneider (Dalton, Mass. Wahconah Regional) that scored sophomore Jake Hamel (Uxbridge, Mass. / Saint John's) from second (1-0).
-Graduate student Philip Gaines (Cambridge, Mass. / Cambridge Rindge & Latin) led off in the bottom of the fifth inning and reached first on a Bridgeport error. He moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by first year Emilio Acosta (Cromwell, Conn. / East Catholic High) and came home on a single by senior R.J. Libby (Middleton, Mass. / Bishop Fenwick) (2-0). Libby and Wironen came home for the final two runs of the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Schneider finished the day going 1-for-2 with two RBIS while Libby went 2-for-4 with one run scored.
-Ryan Donnelly had three hits in five at bats for the Knights.
-Junior Cole Chudoba (Oxford, Conn. / Oxford) earned the win on the mound for Assumption and improved to 3-0 on the season. He went seven innings and struck out seven batters.
-Anthony Martino fell to 1-2 on the season as he pitched 4.1 innings and struck out six batters for Bridgeport.
