-The Lead: The Assumption University baseball team defeated the Hawks of Saint Anselm College in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon to begin their season 2-0.
GAME #1: Assumption 9, Saint Anselm 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Saint Anselm's jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to the homeruns by both Brady Doran and Salvatore Pezzolla. The Hounds would respond with a run in the first inning and three in the second. Graduate Student Derek Adamson (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford) opened the scoring with a single to center field which allowed junior Connor Wironen (Leominster, Mass. / Saint Bernard's) to score. Wironen would knock in two runs in the second inning to push the Hounds lead to 3-2. Graduate Student R.J. Libby (Middleton, Mass. / Bishop Fenwick) also singled to score another run to add to the lead at 4-2 after two innings.
-The Hounds added to their lead in the fourth inning with sophomore Kevin Cox (North Kingstown, R.I. / Worcester Academy) hitting a double down the right field line. Wironen would advance Cox to third with a single to centerfield before Libby drove both of them in with a double to centerfield. Assumption capped off the inning with a single by Adamson to push the lead to 7-2 after four innings.
- Assumption would add two more runs in the sixth inning as graduate student Jared Brescia (Brentwood, N.H. / Exeter) led off the inning with a walk. Brescia was forced out on fielder's choice but Libby reached safely. It was followed up by Adamson advancing on hit by pitch and graduate student Matt Schneider (Dalton, Mass. / Wahconah Regional) loaded the bases with a walk for his classmate Matt Lonardo (Cranston, RI / Cranston) would hit a sacrifice fly. Adamson scored on a wild pitch to put the Hounds ahead 9-2 after six innings.
INISDE THE NUMBERS
-Wironen led the Hounds at the plate going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Adamson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Libby finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs.
-Doran and Pezzolla led Saint Anselm each hitting a homerun in the setback.
-Senior Cole Chudoba (Oxford, Conn. / Oxford) pitched six innings for Assumption. He allowed six hits and two earned runs scored, and struck out five batters while earning the win. Junior Patrick Harrington (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) earned the save on the mound for the Hounds as he went three innings and struck out seven batters.
-Freshman Matt Michel pitched four innings for Saint Anselm's and allowed nine hits and seven runs scored as he falls to 1-1 on the season. Junior David Hunter would pitch four innings in relief allowing two runs and striking out four.
GAME #2: Assumption 7, Saint Anselm 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Hounds were held scoreless through the first two innings but were able to get on the board starting with a single by Wironen and he later scored thanks to the double by Brescia. This would put the Hounds up 1-0 through three innings.
-The Hounds added three more in the bottom of the fourth. Adamson led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Schneider advanced to first on a hit by pitch and Lonardo advanced to first as he was hit by a pitch as well. With the bases loaded, freshman Jared Berardino (Rowley, Mass. / Triton Regional) singled to left field scoring Adamson. Senior Dillon Zona (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Shrewsbury) would then hit a sacrifice fly scoring Schneider and advancing the runners. Lonardo scored on a wild pitch to cap the inning and push the Hounds lead to 4-0.
-Assumption continued to pad their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as Libby started the inning with a walk and stole second. Libby scored on a double by Schneider to center field. His double would be followed up by a double by Berardino as he knocked in Schneider. The Hounds pushed their lead to 6-0 after five innings.
-The Hawks tried to claw their way back into the game in the top of the sixth inning. Kyle Maurice got on base with a hit by pitch and Pezzolla followed up with a single. Mile Borelli reached on a fielder's choice. Dan Baker cleared the bases with a three-run homerun to cut the Hounds lead to 3.
-Assumption added one more run in the bottom of the inning. The inning started with Brescia getting hit by a pitch. Libby would then single to left field and advance the runner to second and Adamson followed up with a walk as well. Schneider earned a sacrifice fly as he scored Brescia and pushed the Hounds lead to 7-3.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Senior Brendan Desautels (Holden, Mass. / Holy Name Central Catholic) got the start for the Hounds on the mound. He went six innings allowing five hits, three earned runs and striking out eleven.
-Schneider went 2-for-2 on the afternoon with two RBIs. Berardino also contributed to the win going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
-Baker led the way for the Hawks going 1-3 with a HR and three RBIs. Pezzolla went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring once.
UP NEXT
-Assumption is back in action on Friday, April 2nd when they take on Franklin Pierce in a doubleheader at Franklin Pierce University starting at 3:00 pm.
