-The lead: The Assumption University baseball team fell in their final two meetings with the Skyhawks of Stonehill College on Sunday afternoon. The Skyhawks edged the Hounds 5-4 in game on before using a sixth inning rally in game two to secure the 7-2 victory.
Game #1: Stonehill 5, Assumption 4
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Following a pair of errors by the Skyhawks, Assumption took the first lead of the game with a two RBI double to left center by graduate student Derek Adamson (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford) in the top of the first inning (2-0).
-The Hounds extended their lead to three in the top of the fourth. Graduate student Matt Lonardo (Cranston, RI / Cranston) led off with a double to left center and came home on an RBI single down the left field line by junior Connor Wironen (Leominster, Mass. / Saint Bernard's) (3-0).
-The Skyhawks got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single up the middle by junior Matt Farragher that sent junior Noah Lucier home (3-1).
-Stonehill added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth innings. With two outs on the board, Lucier singled to left field to score senior Rob Duarte. Sophomore Edward Beauregard, Jr. tied the game with an RBI single to left center that scored Lucier (3-3).
-Assumption used an RBI single to center by graduate student Matt Schneider (Dalton, Mass. / Wahconah Regional) that scored his classmate R.J. Libby (Middleton, Mass. / Bishop Fenwick) to pull ahead 4-3 in the top of the seventh.
-The Skyhawks walked off in the bottom of the seventh on a ground-rule double by sophomore Mike Swanholm that scored two runs for the 5-4 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMNERS
-Adamson went 1-for-2 with two RBIs for Assumption. Wironen finished game on 2-for-3 with one RBI.
-Swanholm led Stonehill at the plate going 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
-Assumption finished game one with six hits. Stonehill also tallied six hits in game one.
-Junior Patrick Harrington (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) falls to 1-2 on the mound for Assumption. Sophomore Jack Choate (North Grafton, Mass. / Westborough) pitched five innings for the Hounds and struck out 10 batters.
-Sophomore Billy Duff earned the win in 0.2 innings pitched. He struck out two batters. Junior Matt Smith pitched six innings and struck out six batters for Stonehill.
Game #2: Stonehill 7, Assumption 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Assumption put up their first run in the top of the third inning. First year Jared Berardino (Rowley, Mass. / Triton Regional) doubled to right center to score Wironen for the 1-0 lead.
-Stonehill put up one run in the bottom of the fifth and erupted for six runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 7-1 lead. First year Trey Ciulla-Hall earned three RBIs with a homer to left field.
-The Hounds crossed one more run across home plate when Schneider doubled to right field to score Adamson in the bottom of the nineth (7-2).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Stonehill finished game two with eight hits while Assumption put up five.
-Beauregard improves to 3-0 on the mound for Stonehill. He pitched all nine innings and struck out six batters.
-Sophomore Shea Ryan (North Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford) falls to 0-1 on the season as he pitched 1.1 innings for Assumption. Junior MacGuire O'Sullivan (Durham, Conn. / Coginchaug Regional) pitched the opening four innings and struck out five batters.
