-The Lead: The Assumption University baseball team fell to the Falcons of Bentley University in the opening two games of a four-game series on Sunday afternoon. The Falcons edged the Hounds in game one, 4-1, before putting up 15 hits and 10 runs in game two for the 10-3 victory.
Game #1: Bentley 4, Assumption 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
-After three and a half scoreless innings Assumption put the first run of the game on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, graduate student Matt Schneider (Dalton, Mass. / Wahconah Regional) sent a homerun over the center field fence for the 1-0 lead.
-The Falcons tied the game with one run in the top of the seventh inning. Senior Charlie Auditore led off with a single up the middle. He moved into scoring position on a wild pitch and crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly to center field by first year Jackson Walonis (1-1).
-Bentley used three runs in the top of the eighth to secure the 4-1 victory. Auditore added two RBIs with a single to left for the Falcons.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Schneider led Assumption at the plate going 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. The Hounds finished game one with two hits.
-Auditore led Bentley at the plate going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Walonis finished 2-for-3 with one RBI. The Falcons put up nine hits in game one.
-Senior Cole Chudoba (Oxford, Conn. / Oxford) pitched seven innings for Assumption. He struck out 12 batters, allowed six hits and one run scored. Junior Patrick Harrington (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) falls to 0-3 on the season in one inning pitched for the Hounds.
-Graduate student Paul Frisoli improves to 2-0 on the mound for Bentley. He pitched eight innings and struck out eight batters.
Game #2: Bentley 10, Assumption 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Bentley scored one run in the top of the first and rallied for seven runs in the top of the second to take an early 8-0 advantage over the Hounds. Sophomore Tim Zupkus led off with a single to shortstop in the top of the first. He came home on a sacrifice fly to right field by graduate student, Ryan Berardino (1-0).
-Auditore led off the second inning with a double to right center and came home on an RBI triple to left center by Walonis (2-0). Bentley put up six more runs with two outs on the scoreboard. Zupkus earned an RBI with a double to left center and Berardino added another RBI with a double to left field that scored sophomore Steve Rizzuto. Junior Liam Sears tripled to right field to score Berardino, unearned, and Sears came home on a wild pitch for the 8-0 lead.
-Assumption got one run back in the bottom of the fifth when graduate student Joe Michael (Johnston, R.I. / Johnston Senior / CCRI) earned an RBI with a ground out that scored his classmate, Derek Adamson (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford) from third (8-1).
-Bentley put up two more runs in the top of the sixth to take the 10-1 advantage.
-Graduate student Matt Lonardo (Cranston, RI / Cranston / URI) doubled to left center for an RBI in the bottom of the sixth and Adamson singled down the left field line to score Lonardo for the final two runs of the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Assumption put up four hits in game two. Lonardo went 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Adamson finished 1-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored.
-Senior Kyle Halloran finished 3-for-4 with one run scored to lead Bentley at the plate in game two. Auditore went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Bentley finished game two with 15 total hits.
-Senior Brendan Desautels (Holden, Mass. / Holy Name Central Catholic) falls to 2-1 on the season as he pitched 1.2 innings for Assumption and struck out one batter.
-Senior Even Christopulos improves to 2-0 on the mound for Bentley. In six innings pitched he struck out four batters.
