-The Lead: The Assumption University baseball team secured two victories over the Falcons of Bentley University on Monday afternoon. The Hounds edged the Falcons in game one, 3-2, before using 15 hits in game two to clinch an 11-9 victory in game two. The Hounds and Falcons split the four-game series 2-2.
Game #1: Assumption 3, Bentley 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Bentley took an early lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Tim Zupkus reached on an error by the Hounds and later scored, unearned, on a single to right center by Senior Kyle Halloran. After two scoreless innings, the Falcons added another run in the top of the fourth to pull ahead 2-0. Sophomore Steve Rizzuto led off with a triple to right field and came home on a sacrifice fly to center field by graduate student, Ryan Berardino.
-Assumption scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the fourth. Graduate student Matt Lonardo (Cranston, RI / Cranston / URI) led off with a double to left field and advanced to third when his classmate, Derek Adamson (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford) singled to center field. Matt Schneider (Dalton, Mass. / Wahconah Regional) earned an RBI with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Lonardo (2-1). With one out on the board, first year Jared Berardino (Rowley, Mass. / Triton Regional) doubled down the left field line to move Adamson into scoring position on third. Sophomore Emilio Acosta (Cromwell, Conn. / East Catholic High) put up an RBI with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Adamson to tie the game at two. Jared Berardino came home on a wild pitch to secure the 3-2 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Lonardo, Jared Berardino and graduate student, R.J. Libby (Middleton, Mass. / Bishop Fenwick) all recorded doubles as Assumption finished with five hits in game one.
-Ryan Berardino and sophomore Joe Boushell both put up doubles while Rizzuto added a triple to account for three out of Bentley's four hits in game one.
-Sophomore Jack Choate (North Grafton, Mass. / Westborough) improved to 1-1 on the mound for the Hounds. He pitched 6.2 innings, struck out nine batters, allowed four hits and two runs scored (one earned). Junior Patrick Harrington (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) earned his third save of the season.
-Senior Jared Brooks pitched four innings and struck out four batters for Bentley as he falls to 2-1 on the season.
Game #2: Assumption 11, Bentley 9
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Bentley put up two runs in the top of the first and two in the top of the third to take an early 4-0 lead over the Hounds in game two. Berardino earned an RBI with a single down the left field line in the first before Rizzuto homered to left field in the third for two RBIs and the 4-0 advantage.
-Assumption got two runs back in the bottom of the third to cut their deficit in half. Sophomore Kevin Cox (North Kingstown, R.I. / Worcester Academy) led off with a single to left field and advanced to second when junior Connor Wironen (Leominster, Mass. / Saint Bernard's) walked. The two base runners came home on a sacrifice bunt by Lonardo that led to an error by the Falcons (4-2).
-The Hounds pulled ahead by three, putting up three runs in the bottom of the fifth and two in the bottom of the sixth, 7-4. Adamson led off in the bottom of the fifth with a single to left field and advanced to second on a single to center by Schneider. Libby earned an RBI with a single through the right side that scored Adamson and put Schneider on third. Acosta followed up with an RBI single to left that sent Schneider home and Libby gave the Hounds the 5-4 lead when he scored on a fielding error by Bentley.
-With two outs on the board in the bottom of the sixth, Schneider singled to short stop and scored on a double to center field by Libby. Libby crossed home when Acosta singled to deep left center to extend Assumption's lead to three, 7-4.
-The Falcons tied the game with three runs in the top of the seventh, including a two RBI homerun to left center by Ryan Berardino (7-7).
-The Hounds used four runs in the bottom of the eighth to regain a comfortable lead heading into the final inning, 11-7. Lonardo led off with a single to right center and came home on an RBI single to left by Schneider. Acosta earned an RBI when he reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop and Adamson crossed home. Junior Jake Hamel (Uxbridge, Mass. / Saint John's) sent a sacrifice fly ball to center field that scored Schneider and sophomore Gianni Fanelli (Berlin, Conn. / Berlin) singled through the left side to score Libby for the 11-7 advantage.
-Bentley took their bid at a comeback with a lead-off homerun in the top of the nineth by Zupkus. Junior Liam Sears got the Falcons their second run of the inning with an RBI double to left center, but that is as close as they would come as the Hounds secured the 11-9 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Schneider went 4-for-5 with one RBI and three runs scored for Assumption. Acosta finished 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs. Libby went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored and Adamson finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Assumption tallied 15 total hits in game two.
-Ryan Berardino led Bentley at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. The Falcons finished game two with 13 total hits.
-Senior James McNamara (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) pitched 6.1 innings for Assumption, struck out one batter and allowed five runs score (three earned). First year Griffin O'Connor (Dedham, Mass. / Dedham) earned the win on the mound in 2.1 innings pitched and improves to 1-0 on the season.
-Graduate student Lloyd Hill pitched four innings for Bentley, struck out two batters, allowed eight hits and five runs scored (three earned). Junior Zach Zdimal falls to 0-1 on the season as he pitched two innings, giving up four hits and four runs scored.
UP NEXT
-Assumption travels to Saint Michael's on Saturday, May 1st and Sunday, May 2nd for a four-game series with the Purple Knights. Game one kicks off at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
