-The Lead: The Assumption University baseball team dropped two close contests with the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University, on the road, on Saturday afternoon. The Ravens edged the Hounds 6-4 in the seven-inning first game of the day and went on to secure the weekend sweep with a 5-2 victory in game two.
GAME #1: FPU 6, Assumption 4
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Franklin Pierce put an early run on the board when senior Jonel Ozuna sent a RBI double to left center field that scored graduate student Tyler Patane in the bottom of the first.
-Assumption took the lead in the top of the third when graduate student Jared Brescia (Brentwood, N.H. / Exeter) homered down the left field line and junior Connor Wironen (Leominster, Mass. / Saint Bernard's) crossed home plate ahead of him for the 2-1 edge.
-The Ravens responded with a homerun and two runs of their own in the bottom of the second inning to regain a one-run lead, 3-2.
-First year Jack Barry (Bridgewater, Mass. / Bridgewater-Raynham) led off with a homerun to left center in the top of the fifth to tie the game at three.
-Ozuna earned three RBIs with a double to left center in the bottom of the fifth to help Franklin Pierce pull ahead by three, 6-3.
-Assumption had a bid at a two-out comeback when Brescia sent sophomore Gianni Fanelli (Berlin, Conn. / Berlin) across home plate in the bottom of the seventh, but the Ravens secured the final out to take game one, 6-4.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Graduate student Matt Lonardo (Cranston, RI / Cranston) led Assumption at the plate going 3-for-3. Brescia was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored.
-Ozuna went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and Flores finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Franklin Pierce.
-Assumption finished game one with nine hits while the Ravens put up seven.
-Junior Patrick Harrington (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) falls to 0-1 on the season as he went 4.2 innings on the mound for Assumption and struck out six batters.
-Graduate student Derek Duffy improves to 1-0, going five innings and striking out 10 batters. Senior Patrick Hannon earned his first save of the season.
GAME #2: Franklin Pierce 5, Assumption 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Assumption put up runs in the first and second inning to take an early lead over the Ravens.
-Wironen scored on a wild pitch in the first inning and Barry sent an RBI single to left center that scored senior Dillon Zona (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Shrewsbury) in the second.
-Franklin Pierce took over the lead with four hits and three runs scored in the bottom of the third. Patane earned an RBI with a single through the right side that scored Flores and junior Jake Miller singled to left field for two RBIs and the 3-2 lead.
-Ozuna earned an RBI in the bottom of the fifth and graduate student, James Boria gave the Ravens their final run of the game with a sacrifice fly that scored Patane in the bottom of the seventh, 5-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Miller led the Ravens at the plate going 4-for-4 with two RBIs.
-Barry went 2-for-3 with one RBI for the Hounds and Wironen went 2-for-4 with one run scored.
-Franklin Pierce put up 12 total hits in game two while Assumption put up seven.
-Senior James McNamara (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) falls to 0-1 on the mound for Assumption. He pitched five innings and struck out five batters.
-Graduate student Shawn Babineau improves to 1-0 as he went seven innings and struck out five batters. Senior Jack Wallace earned his first save of the season, pitching the final two innings and striking out three batters.
