-The Lead: The Assumption University baseball team ran away with two Northeast-10 Conference victories over the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College on the road on Sunday afternoon. The two wins lift the Hounds to a 9-8 record.

Game #1: Assumption 6, Saint Michael's 2

HOW IT HAPPENED

-After two scoreless innings the Purple Knights put the first run of the game on the board in the bottom of the third. First year Matt Sevigny led off with a single to left center and came home on an RBI single to left center by senior Dante Moran.

-The Hounds responded with four hits for six runs in the top of the fourth. Graduate student Jared Brescia (Brentwood, N.H. / Exeter) reached first on a dropped fly ball by the second baseman. Junior Connor Wironen (Leominster, Mass. / Saint Bernard's) singled to right field and Brescia found his way to third on a fielding error by Saint Michael's. Brescia scored Assumption's first run on a wild pitch. Graduate student Matt Lonardo (Cranston, RI / Cranston / URI) loaded the bases with a walk and graduate student Derek Adamson (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford) earned two RBIs with a double to left center that scored Wironen and Lonardo. With two outs on the board, graduate student R.J. Libby (Middleton, Mass. / Bishop Fenwick) homered to center field for two RBIs and the 5-1 lead. Junior Jake Hamel (Uxbridge, Mass. / Saint John's) added to the rally with an RBI double to center that scored first year Jared Berardino (Rowley, Mass. / Triton Regional) for the 6-1 advantage.

-Assumption added two runs in the top of the sixth. Wironen earned an RBI with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Hamel and Lonardo singled to left center to score Brescia for the seven-run lead, 8-1.

-The Hounds extended their lead to 10 in the top of the seventh. Graduate student Matt Schneider (Dalton, Mass. / Wahconah Regional) led off with a homerun to center field and senior Dillon Zona (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Shrewsbury) added two RBIs with a single to right that scored Hamel and Libby, 11-1.

-The Purple Knights got one run back in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single up the middle by first year Andrew Lanthier that scored senior Iset Maldonado (11-2).

-Lonardo put a two-run homerun over the left centerfield fence in the top of the eighth for the 13-2 lead. Saint Michael's added one last run in the bottom of the eighth as Assumption claimed the 13-3 final victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Lonardo led the Hounds at the plate going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Wironen also went 3-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored. Libby finished game one going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

-Assumption finished game one with 17 hits.

-Saint Michael's put up seven total hits in game one.

-Senior Cole Chudoba (Oxford, Conn. / Oxford) earned the win on the mound for Assumption and improves to 3-0 on the season. He pitched seven innings and struck out five batters.

-Senior Alex Mendez falls to 0-6 on the season, pitching 3.2 innings and striking out two batters for Saint Michael's.

Game #2: Assumption 13, Saint Michael's 2

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The Hounds put up six runs in the top of the second for the early lead. Schneider led off with a single to left field and crossed home on a homer to center field by Libby (2-0). Wironen added two RBIs with a single through the right side that scored Zona and Hamel for the 4-0 lead. Brescia scored on an error by the hosts and Wironen came home on a passed ball for the 6-0 advantage.

-Moran earned an RBI for Saint Michael's first run in the bottom of the third. He sent a sacrifice fly ball to left field that scored Maldonado (6-1).

-Libby added two more RBIs with a double to right field in the top of the fourth that scored Schneider and Lonardo (8-1). Hamel singled to left to score Libby for the 9-1 lead.

-Libby stayed hot at the plate with a three-RBI double to center in the top of the fifth to push the Hounds ahead by 11 runs (12-1).

-The Purple Knights scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Moran singled to left center to score Malonado (12-2).

-First year Jack Barry (Bridgewater, Mass. / Bridgewater-Raynham) singled to shortstop for Assumption's final run of the game as sophomore Eric Preston (Woodstock, Conn. / Woodstock Academy) crossed home, 13-2

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-Libby led the Hounds at the plate in game two going 3-for-4 with a homerun, seven RBIs and two runs scored. Assumption finished game two with 12 total hits.

-Saint Michael's put up three hits in game two.

-Senior Brendan Desautels (Holden, Mass. / Holy Name Central Catholic) pitched six innings for Assumption, struck out 10 batters and allowed just three hits. He improves to 4-1 on the mound this season.

-Junior Ozzie Rodriguez falls to 0-5 on the mound for Saint Michael's as he pitched four innings and struck out one batter.

UP NEXT

-Assumption is set to host Southern New Hampshire University in the final weekend of the regular season.
