-The Lead: The Assumption University baseball team fell to the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University in the first two games of a four-game series on Friday afternoon. Prior to the game the Hounds recognized 11 seniors for senior day: Joe Michael (Johnston, R.I. / Johnston Senior / CCRI), Matt Lonardo (Cranston, R.I. / Cranston / URI), Brendan Desautels (Holden, Mass. / Holy Name Central Catholic), Matt Schneider (Dalton Mass. / Wahconah Regional), Derek Adamson (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford), Jared Brescia (Brentwood, N.H. / Exeter), R.J. Libby (Middleton, Mass. / Bishop Fenwick), Andrew Moccia (Lynn, Mass. / Lynn Classical), Cole Chudoba (Oxford, Conn. / Oxford), Dillon Zona (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Shrewsbury), and James McNamara (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy).
Game #1: SNHU 5, Assumption 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
-SNHU scored the first run in the top of the first inning. First year Daniel Rivera walked and put himself in scoring position, stealing second. Rivera scored on an RBI single up the middle by his classmate Christian Mercedes.
-Assumption responded with a run in the bottom of the first. Junior Connor Wironen (Leominster, Mass. / Saint Bernard's) led off with a double to right center and came home on an RBI single up the middle by Lonardo to tie the game at one.
-The Penmen pulled ahead in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly to right field by sophomore Kieran Dowd that scored graduate student Marcus Chavez for the 2-1 lead.
-After two scoreless innings the Hounds tied the game again in the bottom of the sixth inning. Lonardo led off with a single to short stop and crossed home on an RBI by first year Jared Berardino (Rowley, Mass. / Triton Regional) (2-2).
-SNHU used an RBI single through the left side by junior Sam Henrie to score Mercedes for the 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh.
-With two outs on the board in the bottom of the eighth, Libby homered over the center field fence to tie the game again, 3-3.
-The Penmen used two runs in the top of the nineth to pull away with the 5-3 final victory. Junior Dakota Mulcay doubled to right center for the RBI that scored Mercedes and Dowd singled to left to score Mulcay (5-3).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Lonardo led the Hounds going 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored in game one. Wironen also finished with two hits in his four at bats. The Hounds finished game one with five hits.
-Dowd finished game on 1-for-4 with two RBIs for SNHU. Rivera and Mulcay each put up doubles for the Penmen. The visitors finished game one with nine hits.
-Junior Patrick Harrington (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford) started on the mound for Assumption, pitching four innings, striking out five batters, allowing three hits and two runs scored. First year Griffin O'Connor (Dedham, Mass. / Dedham) came in to pitch four innings for the Hounds. He struck out three batters, allowed three hits and gave up one run. Chudoba took the loss on the mound, pitching one inning and striking out on batter. He falls to 3-1 on the season.
-Junior Alex Gomes pitched seven innings for the Penmen, striking out four batters, allowing four hits and two runs scored. Sophomore Ricky Alexy earned the win, pitching two innings, striking out four batters and allowing one run scored. He improves to 1-1 on the season.
Game #2: SNHU 9, Assumption 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Penmen took an early lead with a run in the top of the first. Rivera led off with a double down the left field line and came home on an RBI single through the right side by Mulcay (1-0).
-The Hounds used three hits and two runs in the bottom of the first to pull ahead 2-1. Lonardo doubled to right field and scored on an RBI single to shortstop by Schneider. Schneider advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on an RBI single to left center by Libby.
-The Penmen pulled back ahead with two runs in the top of the second, 3-2. First year Dylan O'Sullivan got things started with a double to right center and advanced to third on an error by the Hounds. O'Sullivan scored on a wild pitch and Rivera doubled to left center to score junior Idelson Taveras.
-SNHU added three runs in the top of the third, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to claim the 9-2 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Libby led the Hounds at the plate going 2-for-3, including a triple and one RBI. Assumption finished game two with seven hits.
-SNHU was led by Rivera in game two as he went 3-for-4 with one RBIS and two runs scored. The Penmen finished game two with 12 hits.
-McNamara took the loss on the mound for the Hounds, pitching five innings and striking out four batters. He falls to 0-2 on the season.
-Junior Jeffrey Praml pitched all seven innings for SNHU and improves to 5-1. He struck out eight batters in the victory.
UP NEXT
-Assumption and SNHU meet again tomorrow, May 8th for two games. The first game will be played at Assumption at 11 a.m. and game two will be played at Polar Park at 3:05 p.m.
