Box Score DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Assumption University baseball team fell to Bentley by a 10-2 decision in the season opener for both schools at Northeast Regional Park on Friday.
Assumption, which was playing as the visiting team on the scoreboard, started off hot by getting a two-run dinger from freshman Sean Moynihan (Middleton, Mass.) in the top of the first inning. Moynihan drilled a shot over the fence in left on the second play of the game after junior Kevin Cox (North Kingstown, R.I.) drew a leadoff walk.
However, Bentley (1-3) shook off the shaky start and slowly battled back by scoring once in the second and another time in the fourth to knot the score with the game nearing its midway point. After Tim Zupkus went yard to tie things up, the Falcons used a six-run seventh inning to complete a rally and pull away. Jackson Walonis and Kyle Halloran each drove in two on a double and single respectively, as the Falcons also jumped on a pair of Greyhound miscues defensively.
Assumption (0-1) tried to get its bats going in the eighth, but the team could no longer solve the Bentley pitching staff as it did at the beginning of the game. Three players who drew a walk could not make it home, and the eight-run margin would stand for the remainder of the contest.
Jared Brooks picked up the win on the mound for Bentley by throwing seven innings and allowing just three hits and two runs. He also struck out seven and walked five Greyhound batters.
The two teams will continue a three-game weekend series of non-conference action tomorrow afternoon at Lake Brantley High School in Altamonte Springs. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
