Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Assumption University baseball team dropped a non-conference game on the road to American International College by an 8-7 score on Wednesday afternoon.
AIC (6-6) scored twice in the first and third innings, but Assumption battled back and went ahead by a 7-5 score after responding with three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth frame of action. Junior Eric Preston (Woodstock, Conn.), who went 3-for-4 with five runs batted in, hit a single to left center to plate sophomore Jared Berardino (Rowley, Mass.) for the team's first run before hitting a grand slam to give the Greyhounds their first lead.
However, the Yellow Jackets battled back by answering with the long ball to eventually win the game. Entering the contest as a pinch hitter, Cameron Fitzgerald went yard in the eighth to tie the score at 7-7, and Alejandro Mosquera began the bottom of the ninth by hitting a solo shot to left center to give AIC the victory in walk-off fashion.
Reliever Joe Oliver earned the victory on the mound for AIC by throwing a scoreless ninth in which he only allowed one hit while also issuing a walk and recording a strikeout. Junior Shane Cronin (Westwood, Mass.) suffered the loss for surrendering the decisive run in the ninth. He gave up two hits in one inning of work.
Assumption (4-7) will continue playing on the road and is next slated to visit Queens for a three-game series over the weekend. The teams will first play a doubleheader on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
