WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Assumption University men's lacrosse team dropped its season opener to Palm Beach Atlantic by a 19-7 score on Wednesday evening.

The Sailfish started the game on a 5-0 run with goals coming from four different players. A pair of additional goals scored by Henry Sloyan and Hunter Sheffield made it 7-1 by the end of the first quarter.

The second and third frames were more evenly played with both sides scoring twice in the second quarter and four times in the third. Sophomore Sam Maciel (Narragansett, R.I.) led a balanced Greyhounds scoring attack with two goals in the third.

However, Assumption could never get the offensive spark it needed to come back from an early deficit. Palm Beach Atlantic outscored the Greyhounds 6-0 in the fourth en route to the double-digit victory.

Brian Connelly led Palm Beach Atlantic (3-2) with four goals, while Austin Evans and Caleb Southard contributed hat tricks. Evans also caused three turnovers and scooped up a ground ball, and Noah McKoeun won 16 faceoffs. Ben Lightsey made 16 six saves to earn the win.

Sophomore Ryan Healey (Westwood, Mass.) and Maciel finished with two goals apiece for Assumption, which was nearly doubled up in shots by a 47-25 margin. Sophomore Colin Malone (East Patchogue, N.Y.) turned away 18 shots and scooped up four ground balls in the loss.

Assumption (0-1) will conclude its trip to Florida with a noon matinee against Lynn on Saturday.
