WINTER PARK, Fla. – Sophomore Owen Podolec (Berwick, Maine) drove in three runs by hitting a double and a home run as the Assumption University baseball team ended its trip to Florida with a convincing 12-4 triumph over Bentley at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Assumption (4-5), which was batting as the home team, scored twice in the bottom of the fourth by getting RBI doubles from Podolec and Emilio Acosta and never trailed in the contest. After Charlie Auditore of Bentley answered with an RBI double of his own in the top of the fifth, the Greyhounds scored an additional two runs in the bottom half of the inning by capitalizing on Falcon errors.

The Greyhounds stayed ahead by scoring at least once in each of the last six frames, which was highlighted by Podolec's two-run dinger in the seventh that gave the team a commanding 10-4 advantage. Senior Connor Wironen (Leominster, Mass.) belted an RBI double down the right field line and scored on sophomore Jared Berardino's (Rowley, Mass.) two-bagger in the eighth to close out the scoring and produce the final outcome.

Junior Shea Ryan (North Chelmsford, Mass.) was credited with his first win of the season after striking out five and not issuing a walk in 5.1 innings of work. Junior Justin Ray (Portland, Maine) and freshman Alexander Meesig (Nashua, N.H.) then combined to pitch scoreless baseball for the remaining 3.2 frames, as they each allowed only one hit and did not issue a single walk to finish the game. Jimmy Hodgson, who surrendered eight hits and eight runs, including two that were earned over 5.1 innings, was charged with the loss for Bentley (2-7).

Assumption returns to New England and will next begin Northeast-10 Conference play when it travels to Pace for a four-game series beginning on Friday.
