Worcester, Mass. – The Assumption University baseball team continued their season on Tuesday afternoon with a thrilling win over Stonehill College. Assumption took a large lead in the early innings of the game only to see the lead evaporated but late inning heroics from the bats gave the Greyhounds the win in the slugfest 14-11 and secured the series victory over Stonehill. 

The Greyhound bats got started early, putting together five straight hits, consisting of four singles and a double. Emilio Acosta (Cromwell, Conn.) and Connor Wironen (Leominster, Mass.) had RBI singles and then Jared Berardino (Rowley, Mass.) followed with an RBI double. Eric Preston (Woodstock, Conn.) then followed with a sacrifice fly to put Assumption up 4-0. Preston then followed with a solo homer in the fourth to push the lead to 5-0. 

James McNamara (Westford, Mass) started on the mound for Assumption and put in a solid day of work. Pitching five innings, two runs on eight hits and struck out three. Assumption put up four more runs in the fifth highlighted by a Sean Moynihan (Middleton, Mass.) two RBI single to make it a 9-2 ball game. 

The Assumption bullpen struggled to find their footing in the tail end of the ballgame, surrendering six runs in the sixth, with Blain Lidsky continuing to torment the Greyhounds throughout the series and hitting a grand slam to put the visitors down by one. Assumption responded and got two more runs in the six, with Kevin Cox (North Kingstown, R.I.) hitting and RBI double, and Berardino getting an RBI single. 

The bullpen woes continued for Assumption as Stonehill pushed three runs across in the seventh to tie the ball game. Alexander Meesig (Nashua, N.H.) came on in relief allowed the tying run but was able to bounce back, strand the go ahead run and get out of the jam, while working the eighth inning and working around an error to strike out two and strand the go ahead run at third yet again. 

The Assumption bats put together the late heroics in the home half of the eighth when Acosta cashed in an RBI single and freshman Cody Smith (Holden, Mass.) provided the big blow of the inning hitting a pinch hit two run homer to give the Greyhounds a three run cushion heading into the ninth. 

Patrick Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) came in to pitch the ninth and locked down the save for Assumption while Meesig picked up the win out of the bullpen, earning the series victory. 

Assumption is back in action this Friday starting a four-game Northeast 10 conference series at Bentley. First pitch is set for 3:30pm.
