Box Score Worcester, Mass.- The Assumption University baseball team dropped a non conference matchup on Saturday afternoon versus the Southwest division leaders in Adelphi University. Matt Alifano led the visitors with all seven RBIs helping the Panthers win 7-4.
Alifano got the day started for the Panthers in the second inning after Alex Rende walked and Jack Wishner hit a single to right, setting the table for Alifano who hit a three run homer to right off of Assumption starter Patrick Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) Alifano got Harrington again later in the fourth inning when he belted a grand slam to right to give Adelphi a 7-0 lead.
John Rizzo was lights out for the visitors for most of the afternoon, going a strong seven innings allowing one hit and striking out 15 Greyhounds. In the eighth the bats of Assumption got to Rizzo, with Nick Gaglioti (West Hartford, Conn) hitting a single to right, Hamel was hit by a pitch and then Owen Podolec (Berwick, Maine) hit a three run homer to center field and into the football bleachers to make it a 7-3 ball game. Kevin Cox (North Kingstown, R.I.) would follow with a single up the middle chasing Rizzo from the ball game and Eric Preston (Woodstock, Conn.) would hit a RBI double to left scoring Cox from first, making it a 7-4 game toget the Hounds within three runs.
Jacob Pederson would nail down the save for the Panthers in the ninth, setting Assumption down in order and secure the win for the visitors by a score of 7-4.
Harrington would get the loss for Assumption with his record going to 4-2 on the year and his final line reading: four innings pitched, allowing seven runs on eight hits and striking out six. Jack Choate would come on in relief and go five innings allowing two hits, two walks and striking out 10. Rizzo would get the win for Adelphi improving his record to 5-2 on the year.
Assumption is back in action next weekend with a four game series versus Saint Michaels College. First pitch is set for 12pm.
