Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass.- The Assumption University baseball team split their doubleheader matchup with Franklin Pierce on Sunday afternoon. The Greyhounds took game one by a score of 6-1 giving them the series win, and would drop game two by a score of 9-2.
Game 1:
Shea Ryan (North Chelmsford,Mass.) would get the start for Assumption and go six innings allowing five hits, one run, and striking out three to pick up the win.
Assumption would open the scoring in the third inning on an RBI single from Emilio Acosta (Cromwell, Conn.) followed by a Jared Berardino (Rowley, Mass.) Sacrifice fly to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Acosta would step up with the bases loaded and hit a groundball to short that took a bad hop that Ian Battipaglia couldn't handle, and two runs would come around to score. Assumption would add two more in the fifth when Jack Barry (Bridgewater, Mass.) would score on a passed ball and then Christopher Rabias (Chelmsford, Mass) would score on an error by Battipaglia to create the 6-1 final. With the win the Greyhounds would clinch the series, their third series win in a row.
Game 2:
Game two would be a nine inning contest, and the Ravens would take an early lead in the third inning when Randy Flores RBI groundout and would add three more on an Ian Battipaglia three run homer in the fifth. The Greyhounds would get two back in the fifth when Jack Barry hit an RBI double and Owen Podolec (Berwick, Maine) would bring home Barry on an RBI single to make it a 4-2 game. Battipaglia would add another big blow in the eighth with a grandslam to right center, for his second homer of the day and create the 9-2 final and help the Ravens avoid the sweep. James McNamara (Westford, Mass.) would start the game for Assumption and get the loss, going six innings, allowing six hits and four runs. Danny Gracia would pick up the win for the Ravens tossing six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and punching out five.
Assumption is back in action on Wednesday, April 6 with a nonconference matchup on the road against New Haven. First pitch is at 3:00
