Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. – The Assumption University baseball team took the first two games of a four game set versus the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon with scores of 12-3 and 4-0. The Greyhounds pumped out 14 hits and were helped by five Saint Mike's errors in game one and were led in game two by a Jack Choate complete game and some late insurance runs to seal the game two victory.
Game One: Assumption 12, Saint Michael's 3
The hosts put up seven runs in the first two innings highlighted by Emilio Acosta (Cromwell, Conn.) who started the offense with an RBI double and had another in the second and Jared Berardino's (Rowley, Mass.) three run homer to left field to put Assumption comfortably up by seven after two. The Greyhounds added three in the sixth on a Kevin Cox (North Kingstown, R.I.) RBI single and Berardino following with a 2 run double, giving him five RBIs in game one.
Patrick Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) threw seven strong innings for Assumption finishing with seven strikeouts, allowing one run on four hits. Justin Ray (Portland, Maine) would follow Harrington with a clean eighth inning and Marc Metivier (Billerica, Mass.) would get the final three outs for the Greyhounds, securing the game one victory.
Game Two: Assumption 4, Saint Michael's 0
The Greyhounds picked up where they left off in game one and scored another first inning run when Acosta grounded into a double play, but Owen Podolec (Berwick, Maine) scored from third giving the hosts the 1-0 lead. The Greyhounds gave Jack Choate (North Grafton, Mass.) some breathing room with some insurance runs in the sixth inning when Cody Smith (Holden, Mass.) hit a RBI double down the left field line, scoring Cox and Berardino would continue his hot streak hitting a 2 run single to right to give Assumption a 4-0 lead.
Choate continued his stellar season and went the distance in game two, his fourth complete game of the year. His final line consisted of nine strikeouts, three walks and three hits allowed.
Assumption is back in action on Sunday, May 1, when they wrap up the four game set with Saint Mike's with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12:00pm.
