Box Score Worcester, Mass. – The Assumption University baseball team dropped a regional contest to CACC leaders Wilmington University on Tuesday afternoon in a slugfest affair. The Greyhounds battled all day, getting within one run late in the game but couldn't push the tying run across.
The Wildcats starting the scoring with two in the first, thanks to a John Mead RBI groundout and a Shawn Haut RBI single. The visitors added four in the second, when Justin Ray (Portland, Maine) threw away a bunt from Matt Warrington, allowing Erik Grady to score. Nick Hertzfeld then hit a single to right scoring Warrington and advanced to third on a throwing error from Emilio Acosta (Cromwell, Conn.) Mead would tack on another run via a sac fly and would score on an error with two outs on a ball hit by Haut, putting the Wildcats up 6-0.
Assumption would get a run back in the bottom of the third when Owen Podolec would hit an RBI single to right. The Wilmington lead grew to 9-1 in the top of the fifth on a Hertzfeld RBI single and then a 2 run triple from Jack McDonald. Assumption would add two runs in the home half of the fifth on a Acosta RBI double and then Podolec would reach on a single and the Greyhounds would pull off a double steal with Podolec taking second and Acosta scoring, making the score 9-3. Assumption would have a big sixth inning, scoring five when Max Lefrancois (Worcester,Mass.) would get hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Connor Wironen (Leominster, Mass.) would reach with an infield RBI single, Kevin Cox would hit a 2 run single to right and then Jack Barry would draw a bases loaded walk to make it a one run 9-8 ballgame.
Wilmington would add insurance runs via a Quentin Ivy two run homer in the seventh making it 11-8 but Cox would hit an RBI triple in the home half to make it 11-9. The Wildcats would add two more runs in the eighth via a sac fly and a RBI triple from Warrington to make it 13-9. Chris Rabias would hit an RBI double in the bottom half of the eighth to make it 13-10 but Alex Krick would come on in the ninth and lock down the save for the visitors.
Ryan Sanberg would get the win for the Wildcats, going five innings allowing three runs (2 earned) on seven hits while striking out seven.
Justin Ray would get the loss for Assumption, going two innings allowing six runs (four earned) on 3 hits and four walks.
Assumption wraps up the regular season this weekend when they faceoff with Northeast 10 leaders Southern New Hampshire with a four game series starting on Friday, May 6.
