Box Score 2 The Assumption University baseball team dropped a conference double header affair to Northeast 10 leaders Southern New Hampshire on Friday evening by scores of 8-4 and 4-1. The Greyhounds were led by Owen Podolec who went 2-3 with an RBI.
Game One: SNHU 8, Assumption 4
Assumption started the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the second thanks to a wildpitch that scored Jack Barry (Bridgewater, Mass.) and then Max Lefrancois (Worcester,Mass.) would score Christopher Rabias (Chelmsford, Mass.) with a RBI groundout, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead. SNHU would respond quickly with three runs in the home half of the second. Back to back extra base hits allowed SNHU to tie the game, with a RBI double coming from John Chacho and Alex Kennedy followed with a RBI triple, the Penmen would then take the lead on an Idelson Taveras RBI single.
The Greyhounds would retake the lead in the top of the third, when Owen Podolec (Berwick, Maine) would lift a sacrifice fly to right and Jared Berardino (Rowley, Mass.) would bring home a run reaching on a fielders choice to give the visitors a lead.
The lead was shortly lived with SNHU putting up two runs in the bottom of the third and three in the bottom of the fourth, the big hits coming from Nick Schwartz's two run homer in the third and Christian Mercedes would make the score 8-4 on a two run single.
The Greyhounds offense could not muster any threat in the middle innings, going down in order through three frames. They threatened in the eighth, getting the bases loaded but a strikeout and groundout got the host Penmen out of the jam.
Patrick Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) would start the game for Assumption and be dealt the loss, his final line reading 3.1 innings pitched, allowing eight runs on ten hits and striking out three. His record standing at 5-3 on the year.
Shane Cronin (Westwood, Mass.) would pitch 3.2 innings of hitless and scoreless ball out of the bullpen.
Brandon White picked up the win for SNHU, going seven innings allowing four runs (none earned) on five hits, walking a pair and striking out six.
Game Two: SNHU 4, Assumption 1
The two teams traded runs in the first two innings, with SNHU striking in the first with a leadoff home run from Danniel Rivera, giving the hosts a short lead that was erased by a Jack Barry groundout in the second. The Penmen would retake the lead in the fourth on erros by the Greyhound defense and add an insurance run in the fifth on a solo homer from Anthony Poole. John Chaco would deliver an RBI groundout in the sixth off Matthew Gardner (South Deerfield, Mass.) to create the 4-1 final.
Shea Ryan would pitch five strong innings for Assumption allowing three runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out six. His record stands at 4-3 on the year.
Josh Roberge would go the distance for SNHU, throwing a complete game, allowing one run on five hits, walking one and striking out 14.
Assumption concludes the regular season on Sunday with a doubleheader against SNHU. First pitch is set for 12pm.
