Brookville, N.Y. (February 21) -- In the 2015 season opener on Saturday afternoon, the Assumption College men's lacrosse team dropped a 14-3 final to No. 6 ranked NYIT in non-conference action. The game was the season opener for both teams and was played in snowy conditions.
The visitors trailed by a 2-1 margin the first quarter, including a goal late in the period as senior Tim Casey (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) closed the margin with just 1:18 on the clock. The Bears controlled the second quarter however, jumping out to a 6-1 halftime lead as NYIT outshot the Hounds by a slim 14-13 margin over the first half.
In the third, Will Kistinger scored for NYIT just nine seconds into the period before senior Peter Gersbeck (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) answered for the Hounds with a goal that was assisted on by Tim Casey (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) 5:31 into the quarter. The Bears stretched the lead to 14-2 with just over five minutes left in the game before Conor Darby (Haverhill, Mass./Proctor Academy) scored his collegiate goal to close out the scoring in the 14-3 final.
Assumption held a 26-20 edge in ground balls for the game, while also being successful on 18-of-23 clear attempts. Faceoffs were even at 10 each, with Assumption junior Nick Guarino (Avon, Conn./Avon) winning 10-of-20 attempts for the Hounds.
Senior Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) made 10 saves in the loss, while Alex Seltzer turned aside 10 shots while picking up the win.
Assumption falls to 0-1 overall with the loss, while the Bears improve to 1-0 in the victory.
The Hounds are back in action on Saturday, February 28th as the team travels to Merrimack for the Northeast-10 opener beginning at 1 p.m. in North Andover.
