- Records: Assumption (6-1-1, 4-1-1 NE10); Saint Anselm (3-6, 1-6 NE10)
- Location: Worcester, Mass. (Multi-Sport Stadium)
- The Lead: The Assumption women's soccer team earned a hard fought 2-1 victory over Saint Anselm tonight, improving their NE10 record to an impressive 4-1-1 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Saint Anselm jumped on Assumption fast, as the Hawks got on the board just 7 minutes into the contest. Suzanne Cotter fired a shot at the top of the box that took a fortunate deflection for the visitors, falling at the feet of Corey Murray who took it in one-on-one with sophomore keeper Alexis Nason (Saco, Maine / Thornton Academy) before slotting it past her.
- It didn't take long for the Hounds to respond, as junior Ania Spina (Wallingford, Conn. / Mark T. Sheehan) sent a long ball over the backline's head to an on-running Kallie Villemaire (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown) who beat junior goalkeeper Elise Bouchard to level the score at one goal apiece.
- With the game tied 1-1, sophomore center back Sammy Ferrera (Natick, Mass. / Natick) jumped on her opportunity. After a failed clearance off of a corner kick by the Hawks, senior captain Amanda Arnold (Saco Maine, Thornton Academy) played the ball back into the box where the goalie couldn't handle it, dropping it at the feet of Ferrera who calmly sank the game winner.
- Nason was then called into action for the remaining 12 minutes of the contest, as she made a handful of tough saves to keep the Hounds in front.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS:
- Ferrera's game winning goal was the first of her collegiate career.
- Villemaire builds upon her NE10 and National leading goal mark of 13, while Spina climbs to second in the conference with six assists.
QUOTE FROM THE COACH:
"I thought tonight was a tough game and didn't start out the way that we wanted, and I thought our energy was pretty low. We talked about that stuff at halftime and said a couple things that we needed to improve on and I think we went out that second half and had a little bit more energy and fought through it. It wasn't the prettiest soccer that we've ever seen but a win is a win." – Head Coach Grace Barnard
