Box Score 2 Flushing, N.Y. - The Assumption University baseball team picked up a pair of wins on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Queen's College. The Greyhounds won game one by a score of 7-0 and game two by a score of 5-2, backed behind the pitching staff who totalled 24 strikeouts over the two games.
Game One: Assumption 7- Queens 0
In game one, Patrick Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) started on the mound for Assumption and had an impressive outing, pitching 6 2/3rd scoreless innings and striking out 11 batters. With the win, Harrington improved his record to 2-1 on the year.
The Greyhounds got on the board in the fourth inning when Jared Berardino (Rowley, Mass.) doubled to center scoring Emilio Acosta (Cromwell, Conn.) who opened the inning by reaching on an error. Berardino advanced to third on a throwing error on his hit and Jack Barry (Bridgewater, Mass.) followed with a sacrifice fly to score Berardino to give Assumption a 2-0 lead.
Berardino again helped Assumption add an insurance run in the sixth when he brought home Acosta on a groundout to third that the third baseman made an error on. Christopher Rabias (Chelmsford, Mass) then hit a 2 RBI single to left that brought home to push the lead to 5-0. Kevin Cox added an RBI single in the 7th and Berardino scored on a Jake Hamel (Uxbridge, Mass.) grounder that resulted in an error to give the Hounds a 7-0 lead.
James McNamara (Westford, Mass.) pitched in relief following Harrington and threw 2 1/3rd innings and registered one strikeout, giving the staff a total of 12 in game on and only surrending four hits.
Game 2: Assumption 5- Queens 2
Assumption piled up five extra base hits in game two while the pitching staff racked up twelve strikeouts to help complete the sweep for the Greyhounds.
The Greyhounds started the scoring right away when freshman Cody Smith (Holden, Mass.) hit a leadoff homerun to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead. Queens would tie the game at one via a passed ball but the Hounds would answer in the top half of the second when Jared Berardino led off the second inning with a homer and would drive in another run in the fourth to push the Hounds lead to 3-1. Connor Wironen would add crucial insurance runs in the eighth with a two out two RBI triple to right to push the Hounds lead to 5-1. Jack Choate (North Grafton, Mass.) would start the game for Assumption and get the win, going six innings and striking out 10 while Corey Chiappone (Bellingham, Mass.) would pick up his second save of the year, working around a hit batter and stranding the runner at second to secure the win and sweep for Assumption.
The Hounds are back in action with their first Northeast 10 matchup of the year next weekend with a four game series versus Saint Anselm
