Box Score The Assumption University baseball team scored all their runs in the final four innings and escaped danger in the final frame as the Greyhounds picked up a non-conference road win in Springfield over American International College on Wednesday afternoon.
The hosts jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Assumption starter Shane Cronin (Westwood, Mass.) and the Greyhound bats couldn't figure out Brendan Gaul for the first five innings. Assumption got on the board in the sixth with an RBI single from Jake Hamel (Uxbridge, Mass.) and Emilio Acosta (Cromwell, Conn.) reached on an error that brought home Nick Gaglioti (West Hartford, Conn) to tie the game.
The following inning, the visitors broke open the score, putting up five runs starting with a Gaglioti 2 RBI double followed by a Kevin Cox (North Kingstown, R.I.) RBI single and an Acosta 2 RBI double. Christopher Rabias would add a 2 RBI double in the 8th and Gaglioti would hit a two run homer to right center, making him 3for4 on the day with four RBIs pacing the offense. Jack Barry (Bridgewater, Mass.) would hit a two run homer in the 9th to make it 13-2.
The Assumption pitching staff would have a pen day, as they rolled out 10 different arms on the day and tallied six strikeouts. Things got tricky in the ninth with the Yellow Jackets scoring six runs in the final frame, but Justin Ray (Portland, Maine) would finish the inning and lock down the win for Assumption who improved their record to (10-8, 3-1 NE10) while the Yellow Jackets fell to (6-14, 0-4 NE10)
The Greyhounds are back in action on Friday, April 1 when they host Franklin Pierce University for a four game series over the weekend. First pitch on Friday is set for 3:30.
