Baseball Falls To Stonehill In Extra Inning Thriller At Polar Park

Box Score

Worcester, Mass.- The Assumption University baseball team continued their 2022 season on Saturday afternoon with a Northeast 10 conference matchup versus the Stonehill Skyhawks playing the game at Polar Park, home of the AAA affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. The game would be a tight battle with both teams trading runs early on and the Hounds taking the lead in the eighth, only for the Skyhawks to tie it in the ninth and win it in the twelfth 6-5.

Assumption got the scoring started in the second inning when Christopher Rabias (Chelmsford, Mass.) hit an RBI double inside the third base bag and down the left field line to score Connor Wironen (Leominster, Mass.) from second. Jake Hamel (Uxbirdge, Mass.) then followed with a 2 out 2 RBI single to right to give Assumption the 3-0 lead.

Stonehill answered with a 3 run inning of their own when Jack Marshall hit an RBI double to left and Chris Roberti followed with a 2 out 2 RBI double to bring home two Skyhawks and even up the score at 3 all. Patrick Harrington would start the game for the Greyhounds and go four innings, allowing three runs on five hits and would strike out three. Peter Haas would start for Stonehill and would go four innings allowing three runs on five hits and would strikeout three.

After over two hours in a rain delay, Harrington's day was done and  James McNamara (Westford, Mass.) would do an excellent job out of the pen, pitching four shutout innings allowing one hit and punching out two. Assumption would take the lead in the bottom of the eighth on a 2 run single to right from Wironen and give the hosts a chance to close it out in the ninth.

The Greyhounds turned to Matthew Gardner to get the final three outs, but the Skyhawks would not go away quietly. The leadoff batter would draw a walk and then advanced to second on a balk. An error by the third baseman would make it a one run ball game and would see Justin Ray (Portland, Maine) come in to get the final two outs. The Hounds would get a gift when the Skyhawk runner would be thrown out at third, but Taylor Gaspar would hit a double to get into scoring position and would score the tying run on a RBI single from Conor Kiely and send the game to extra innings.

Both teams would go back and forth through extras with Stonehill breaking through in the twelvth on a Blaine Lidsky triple to center field. Matt Tyman would get the win out of the pen for the Skyhawks going four innings in relief, allowing three hits and striking out six. Spencer Cipro (Brookfield, Mass.) would get the loss throwing one inning and allowing one run on two hits.

Assumption continues their four game series with Stonehill on Sunday, April 10th with a doubleheader starting at 12 pm. The two games will consist of two 7 inning contests.
