Box Score 2 Worcester, Mass. - The Assumption University baseball team continued their season on Sunday afternoon wrapping up their four game set with Saint Michael's college earning a split on the day via late inning heroics and mounting a comeback win in game one, but then falling in game 2. Prior to game 2 the senior class was honored for their contributions and commitments to the program.
Game One: Assumption 9, Saint Mike's 8
The visitors started the scoring with four in the first, with an error with two outs on a dropped fly ball proving costly. The error would allow one run to score and the Filly Santos followed with a 2 run single up the middle and would come around to score on a Brady Clark single that snuck under the glove of second baseman Jack Barry, to give Saint Mike's a 4-0 lead.
The Greyhounds would respond over the next two innings, getting on the board when Jared Berardino (Rowley, Mass.) reached on an error by the second baseman with the bases loaded allowing Connor Wironen (Leominster, Mass.) to score. Barry would follow with a sac fly to right to make it 4-2. The bats would tie the game in the home half of the second when Owen Podolec (Berwick, Maine) hit an RBI triple to right scoring Wironen and Cody Smith (Holden, Mass.) followed with an RBI single to score Podolec.
Saint Mike's would retake the lead in the fourth off of starter Shea Ryan (North Chelmsford, Mass.). A dropped fly ball in right by Smith would put runners at first and second and Anthony Santosuosso would follow with a 2run double to left and Terrance Moynihan would hit a single to left to score Santosuosso. Brady Perron would then hit a double to left to score Moynihan and chase Ryan from the game. Alexander Meesig (Nashua, N.H.) would relieve Ryan and strand two runners in scoring position.
Assumption would get a run back in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Nick Gaglioti (West Hartford, Conn.) making it an 8-5 ball game. The Greyhounds would mount a comeback in the seventh when Wironen would lace a triple to center field scoring two runs. Saint Mike's followed by getting two quick outs but Emilio Acosta (Cromwell, Conn.) would tie the game on an RBI single to right.
The Greyhounds would win the game in the ninth when Berardino would hit a walk off single to right with the bases loaded, sending the Greyhounds dugout into a frenzy, completing the comeback win.
Meesig would get the win out of the bullpen going 5.1 innings of scoreless ball, allowing 2 hits and 3 strikeouts.
Game Two: Saint Mike's 7, Assumption 5
The Purple Knight's scored in the opening frame on a Brady Perron RBI double and in the second on a Nate Rogers RBI single, but the Hounds would respond with a Berardino RBI single in the home half of the first and a 3 run double from Kevin Cox (North Kingston, R.I.) to retake the lead by a score of 5-2.
Saint Mike's would cut the Greyhounds lead to one with a Brady Clark RBI single and then a sac fly from Santosuosso and would take the lead in the fifth. Trevor Moulton (Coventry, Conn.) would come on in relief of James McNamara (Westford, Mass.) who finished with a line of four innings, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out two. The visitors would get to Moulton after a one out triple and then a walk, Filly Santos would tie the game with a RBI single to right. John Luke Cianciolo and Clark would tack on RBI singles to score two more and give Saint Mike's a 7-5 lead.
The Greyhounds would not go away easily, loading the bases in the seventh but Jake Hamel would strike out looking to end the game.
Assumption is back in action on Tuesday, May 3 with a non conference matchup versus Wilmington University. First Pitch is set for 3:30pm.
